Urinary Catheter Types and Sizes

Apr 25,2025

Urinary catheters are indispensable medical devices used to manage urinary retention, incontinence, and other urological conditions. They are available in various types and sizes, each designed to meet specific clinical needs while ensuring patient comfort and safety. The most common type is the indwelling or Foley catheter, which is inserted via the urethra into the bladder and retained in place by an inflatable balloon. Foley catheters are typically utilized for long-term drainage and post-operative care. Another widely used category is intermittent, or straight, catheters. These are used temporarily to drain the bladder and are removed after a single use, making them ideal for patients who perform self-catheterization.

For male patients, external or condom catheters provide a non-invasive option that adheres to the penis and directs urine into a collection bag, reducing the risks associated with invasive procedures. In cases where the urethral route is unsuitable, suprapubic catheters, which are inserted surgically through the lower abdominal wall into the bladder, offer a reliable alternative.

Sizing of urinary catheters is measured using the French (Fr) scale, where one French unit is equivalent to approximately 0.33 millimeters in diameter. Pediatric patients require smaller sizes, generally in the range of 5 Fr to 10 Fr, while adult sizes typically range from 14 Fr to 18 Fr. The precise size selected depends on individual anatomical variations and the specific clinical situation to avoid complications such as urethral trauma.

Understanding the variety of urinary catheter types and their corresponding sizes is critical for healthcare professionals. This knowledge facilitates the proper matching of device and patient needs, ultimately enhancing therapeutic outcomes and patient safety in urological care.
